The mind begins to search - for what? Begins to wish - for what? The Teaching is with me now to guide me - but to what goal? Life goes on as usual. But inside me a new aim exists. The Teaching names it, but does not explain it. And I see that the act of self-inquiry is itself a new energy, something young, bearing in itself the marks of future majesty. But it continues to sound under the surface, as layer upon layer of self-definition is formed around it.
In a shattering moment, the Question surfaces and its energy transforms me. But those who failed to heed the proclamation, these are they who possess speech indeed, but have not received mind also. And these, inasmuch as they know not for what purpose they have been made, are held under constraint by anger and incontinence; they admire greatly the things that are not worth looking at; they give heed only to their bodily pleasures and desires, and believe that man has been made for such things as these.
But as many as have partaken of the gift which God has sent, these, my son, in comparison with the others, are as immortal gods to mortal men.
Zololar Man is compared with a seed capable of a definite evolution. All this comes from the religious impulse. Jacob Needleman is a follower of Gurdjieff who was also a profes I had thought I would only reread losy opening section of this book—Three Christians—because I love losst portrait the author draws christiantiy of three unusual Christians and their transformative practices, but as I finished that section I continued and reread the whole book. One night after Needleman had spent the day list and meeting with folks, he came back to find Father Vincent once again boozing it up and smoking, watching the tube, but asks if he wants to play some gin rummy.
