Problem Sets Problem sets will be assigned every two weeks. Do not put off doing the problems until the last minute. Late homeworks are accepted only if there is a valid medical excuse, or in very special circumstances only with the prior consent of the recitation instructor. You are encouraged to work with other students in the class, but your final write-up should be your own and should be based on your own understanding.
Exams There will be five in-class exams during the lecture hours. There will also be a three-hour final exam during finals week.
The in-class exams and the final exam are closed book and calculators are not allowed. You will be allowed to use a 4" x 6" index card. At most once during the semester, if you fail an in-class exam you may take a make-up exam to replace the failed exam by, at most, the minimal passing grade for the exam.
All make-up exams both for excused absences and to raise a failing grade will be given within one week of the original exam. Grading Each hour exam will be worth points, the final exam will be worth points, and the graded problem sets will be worth 50 points each. A total of 1, points is available.
Simmons - Calculus With Analytic Geometry
Format Students will need both the course textbook Simmons, George F. Calculus with Analytic Geometry. Calculus 1 to complete the assigned problem sets. The course reader is where to find the exercises labeled 1A, 1B, etc. Problem sets have two parts, I and II Part I consists of exercises given in the course reader and solved in section S of the course reader. It will be graded quickly, checking that all is there and the solutions not copied. Part II consists of problems for which solutions are not given; it is worth more points.
